Music Television (MTV for short) is a channel that was first set-up to broadcast music and music videos to the masses, although now it mainly shows reality T.V shows. MTV first began broadcasting on August 1st 1981 with the words, “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll” Spoken by John Lack. The first music video fittingly played on MTV was “Video killed the radio star” by The Buggies.Through the years MTV slowly began to decrease the time spent on their music video coverage and started showing more T.V programs. This caused problems as their original fanbase felt that they were being left out, leading MTV to then expand into more channels with such as MTV 2 and MTV Music that are dedicated to music only.
MTV was a major turning point in the music industry and is a significant reason as to why music videos have become an industry standard. Getting your song on the popular new T.V channel called MTV meant that you were guaranteed high sales and a successfully selling single or album. However your music could not be played on MTV without a music video.
